Jub Jub finally got his passport back after making a successful application for the relaxation of his bail conditions this week.

The media personality and rapper is not a flight risk, his lawyer has maintained, arguing that the nature of the entertainer's work requires him to travel a lot.

The Uyajola 99 host Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye briefly appeared at the Johannesburg Magistrate Court on allegations of attempted murder and assault after he handed himself over to the police in July.

Three complainants have laid changes for reported rape incidents that allegedly happened from 2006 to 2009.

He arrived in court in all black accompanied by his usual entourage and his uncles. He is facing 13 criminal charges including rape, indecent assault, kidnapping, and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, arrived with his family who are adamant the rapper is innocent.

His legal representative Advocate Terrence Baloyi said they made the application because his client has lined up performing gigs in Lesotho, Mozambique, and Botswana. On Freedom Day, Jub Jub will be performing in Botswana, and then on 2 and 29 June, he will be performing in Lesotho and Mozambique respectively.

“My client has received confirmation of his performances outside the country. We request that he be allowed to have and use his passport throughout. And only report to the investigating officer and the other condition may remain.”

It was highlighted in court by the magistrate that what is the use of handing the passport to Jub Jub when the condition has clearly stated that he is not allowed to leave the country.

“I am not comfortable cancelling altogether bail conditions three and four. I will order amending bail conditions number three and four for the applicant who is the accused in this matter to be able to leave the Republic of South Africa for the period of 26 April to 30 July 2024. The passport must be returned on 1 August 2024. Any amendments to the bail applications will be heard by the court.”

State prosecutor Advocate Nel told the court that she does not oppose the application for relaxation of bail conditions and the accused having the passport for the stated period.

She only has a problem with Jub Jub wanting to have the passport in his possession for the rest of the year.

She says it will not be in the interest of justice to have the conditions of bail fully relaxed given the charges that he is facing.

“It may sound like we are inconveniencing the accused but for now he will have to come to court whenever he has gigs outside the country so that we know about all his movements.”
