Following investigations into Luke Fleurs' murder, six men were apprehended in Slovoville, Soweto, on 10 April 2024, seven days after his death.

They remain in custody as the state is opposing bail for the men being held responsible for the death of the late Kaizer Chiefs defender.

Fleurs was shot dead during an alleged hijacking at a petrol station near Honeydew in Roodepoort, west of Joburg in early April.

At the time of his death, he had just signed with Kaizer Chiefs and was waiting to be attended to at the gas station when he was shot. He was taken to the hospital and was declared dead on arrival.

On Tuesday the six accused, all from Slovoville, Ndumiso Ndura Moswane (26), Fernando Nando Sive (25), Nhlakanipho Dlamini (21), Franky Xaba (25), Maredi Mphahlele (36) and Thembinkosi Hlanikhawu(31) made their bail applications at Roodepoort Magistrates Court.

They are facing charges of murder with a common purpose, robbery with aggravating circumstances and obstruction of the administration of justice.

Their brief appearance was postponed due to the investigation officer not being able to take the stand as Magistrate Delise Smith requested on the previous court appearance.

The officer was unable to attend the proceedings to provide testimony due to illness.

Asked about further arrests, National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said the NPA continues to guide the investigation and believes that, when information comes along, the police will be in a better position to comment about more arrests.

“At this stage, we are still dealing with the bail application.

“The state was still busy with its evidence in opposing the release of the accused on bail, hence the court has now requested the investigation officer.

“Previously we tendered an affidavit of the investigation officer emanating from that affidavit the court then requested him to attend today’s proceedings so that the court can be able to ask certain questions regarding issues that are left unclear to the court.”

The matter will be back in court on 14 May 2024.

It has been postponed for the state to verify aspects of the information contained in its bail affidavits which requires the investigating officer to be available to take the stand.

The accused remain in custody.
