Recent data has shown that around 70% of all hijackings in South Africa occur in home driveways and primarily during three hours in the evening, according to MiWay Insurance.

"According to recently released statistics by Crime SA, an estimated 71% of South African car hijackings occur in residential driveways," Youlon Naidoo, executive head of claims and procurement at MiWay Insurance, said in a statement this week.

"Our internal data further reveals that most hijackings take place within a 5km radius, mainly between 18:00 and 21:00, and that they rarely occur in the morning."

Further stats from the South African Police Service (SAPS) show that 5 488 cars were hijacked during the second quarter of 2023, with an estimated 60 hijackings reported daily. This is an increase from the first quarter of 2023, during which an estimated 57 cars were hijacked per day.

Naidoo advised motorists to be alert over whether they are being followed, to have alternate driving routes when driving home, and to know where the nearest police station is.

"Hijackers are constantly attempting new tactics, so car owners also need to be smarter and stay a step ahead by being constantly aware of their surroundings," said Naidoo.

There was additional caution over people's erratic travel times during the festive season.

"Our movements and behaviours change from our usual routines over the festive season. Whatever the time, when arriving home, do not open your gate and pull into your driveway if there is a car behind you. Instead, drive around the block to see if you can lose the car, or stop parallel to your gate, which will allow you to make a quick getaway should the trailing vehicle slow down.

"Always make sure that you always observe your full surroundings look forward, backwards and sideways."
