Former minister of public enterprises Malusi Gigaba told the State Capture Commission that he never applied pressure on state-owned companies to sponsor events for the now-defunct Gupta-linked daily newspaper The New Age during his time in the portfolio.
Gigaba spent the afternoon session of his Monday appearance before the commission responding to evidence from witnesses, including former Transnet chair Mafika Mkhwanazi, who told the inquiry last year that Tony Gupta demanded that 30% to 50% of the freight rail entity's R1 billion marketing budget go towards the Gupta-linked newspaper.
