The 59th Fleur Du Cap Theatre Awards took place on 17 March 2024 at the Baxter Theatre Centre in Rondebosch. The ceremony honoured the best local productions in and around Cape Town.

The event, sponsored by Heineken Beverages, saw Afrikaans plays winning big, taking home some of the most prestigious awards.

The award for Best Production went to Die Moeder, starring Sandra Prinsloo and Dawid Minnaar.

Die Fel Omstrede Kroon van Edward II en Gaveston, by Belgian playwright and novelist Tom Lanoye, was nominated in nine categories and earned three awards, including Best Director, Best Lighting Design and Best Costume Design.

Prinsloo, who received the Fleur du Cap Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022, won Best Performance by a Lead Actress. Brent Palmer won Best Performance by a Lead Actor for his role in King George.

Rodgers and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music, presented by Pieter Toerien Productions and Cape Town Opera, also won some acting honours, including Best Performance by a Lead Actress for Brittany Smith as Maria and Best Performance by a Supporting Actor for William Berger as Max.

Smith was emotional receiving the award, saying in her acceptance speech, "Thank you Fleur Du Cap for acknowledging my hard work". She thanked all the major role players in the production, occasionally pausing to compose herself.

"I want to dedicate this award to my mommy and my daddy who both beat cancer in the space of five years. And without them, their love and support, I would not be here today," she said.

The production of Giacomo Puccini's Tosca won awards for Best Performances in the male and female categories in an Opera, for roles played by Lukhanyo Moyake and Nobulumko Mngxekeza.

Gregory Vuyani Maqoma, who was previously honoured with the The Encore Award, also spoke at the event.

"It was on this very stage in October, exactly a week before I was celebrating my birthday in Johannesburg, that I left my soul on the floor. But what was deeply humbling and moving was how the audience picked it all up," he said.

"[They] packaged it back and sent it to me with soul. It was the most incredible thing to witness in my 34 years of performing. To be acknowledged immediately with immense power and gratitude from an audience," he added.
