  • The tantalising tale of South Africa's football history will be told in a four-part docuseries, Pulse of a Nation.
  • It tells the story of the creation, growth and enduring dramatics of the Premier Soccer League and a look at the events and people who shaped the game.
  • Viewers can look forward to seeing the familiar faces of former Santos strike Duncan Cowie and PSL chairman Irvin Khoza, among others.

Local football lovers are this month in for a treat as the tangled and tantalising tale of South African football is told in a four-part documentary coming to SuperSport and Mzansi Magic.

Per a statement, Pulse of a Nation tells the story of the creation, growth and enduring dramatics of the Premier Soccer League (PSL). It also looks at the many events and people who shaped the game in the country.

Established in 1996, the PSL is the administrator of professional football in South Africa and an affiliate member of the South African Football Association.

"The series takes the form of a tribute to those great men and women who built the game we love into what it is today. The storytellers stand on the shoulders of giants, and what a privilege it is," executive producer Gareth Whittaker said.

Football fanatics can look forward to the familiar faces of former Santos strike Duncan Cowie, PSL chairman Irvin Khoza, Kaizer Chiefs owner Kaizer Motaung, Orlando Pirates iron lady Moipone Moorosi, Shakes Mashaba and Imtiaz Patel.

"This documentary weaves together the threads of our history, our people and our love of this game and provides an integrated view of the sport's evolution, challenges and triumphs," director Luthando Tshaya said.

"It was an honour and pleasure to build this story as a reference point for many generations to come, and we cannot wait to share it with the people who love this game as much as we do."

Making Pulse of a Nation:

  • It took the large team of producers, writers, researchers, archivists, directors and editors more than three years to complete.
  • It comprises more than 60 sit-down interviews with football legends, players, administrators, musicians, historians, supporters and pundits.
  • Location shoots took place in the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Free State, Gauteng and Limpopo.
  • Sixty-two teams are featured in the documentary, which took more than 18 months to edit.

Pulse of a Nation premieres on SuperSport PSL (DStv 202) on Sunday, 10 September at 20:00 and on Mzansi Magic (DStv 161) at 21:300, with new episodes weekly until Sunday, 1 October.
