In yet another global triumph for South Africa, the Mother City has been ranked as the second-best city in the world to live and visit.

This is according to Time Out's annual survey, which collaborated with the research company, Potentia Insight, to gather insights from thousands of city-dwellers on various factors about their cities.

Some of these factors include the quality and affordability of food, culture and nightlife, the emotional impact of the city, its aesthetic appeal, the ease of social connections, and more.

The survey also polled more than 100 well-travelled staff from Time Out, including writers and editors from around the world, to get a sense of the cities they aspire to live in and find most exciting to visit at the moment.

The results revealed that, second to The Big Apple (New York City), Cape Town emerged as the second-best place to live and visit globally, thanks to its breathtaking scenery, vibrant restaurants, lively nightlife and undisputed natural beauty.

Also known for being the most LGBTQI+ friendly city in Africa, Cape Town features prominent attractions such as Robben Island, the District Six Museum, portraying a part of South African history, the picturesque, colourful homes in Bo-Kaap, Table Mountain, V&A Waterfront, Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, and more.

The city's economy is also fuelled by tourists using dollars to support businesses in townships and other areas.

"Cape Town scored highly across the board. A whopping 100 percent of locals said the city is beautiful and that it made them happy, while Cape Town's culture scene ranked highest in the world for its quality," according to the survey.

New York City, also known as 'the city that never sleeps', claimed the top spot in the ranking due to its ever-buzzing establishments, including restaurants, bars and shops, which operate 24 hours a day. Notable attractions in the city include Central Park, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Times Square, the Statue of Liberty, and the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, among others.

Berlin, securing the third position, joined the top 10 along with London, Madrid, Mexico City, Liverpool, Tokyo, Rome, and Porto at number 10.
