WATCH - Bikers for Mandela Day start 7th annual trip

Johannesburg – The Bikers for Nelson Mandela Day embarked on their seventh annual trip from Johannesburg to Mozambique on Thursday, with local celebrities.

This year's event, organised by Nelson Mandela's former assistant, Zelda la Grange, would focus on violence against women and children. DJ Fresh, Angie Khumalo, Alex Caige and Karen Zoid joined the bikers for their journey.

The group was supported by 1st for Women Insurance, via its charitable trust.

This was Zoid's second trip with the bikers in honour of former president Nelson Mandela.

Speaking to News24, Zoid said no excuse was needed to get involved in charity events.

"It's a wonderful initiative and I enjoy being part of it," she said.

Gauteng Premier David Makhura said at the event: "Today is a great day and it is that period in our country and in the world where we get overwhelmed by the need to do good, take action, and make a difference."

Once the bikers got to Mozambique they would be taught about the fight against malaria.

Their first big stop would be in Nelspruit on Thursday evening, for a screening of the movie "Dis ek, Anna" (It's me, Anna). It tells the story of a young woman who avenges years of abuse suffered at the hands of her stepfather.

The group left from Bethany Home in Johannesburg – a shelter for abused women and children – where they spent 67 minutes planting a new vegetable garden and repainting the jungle gym.

The 1st for Women Foundation donated R50 000 to the organisation.
