Harare Police Station has a new station commander at the helm and is promising to bring “professionalism” to the station while serving the community well.
Col Thembelani Mahlatshana has vast experience as a police officer. He joined the service in 1991 in Gqeberha, formerly known as Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape.
Mahlatshana told City Vision he will expect high-quality service from his staff to serve the community.
He also believes that active partnerships between the community and police will help in solving crime-related matters such as carjacking in the area.
“My managerial and leadership style is to listen to both sides without compromising my organisation. I would describe myself as a team player, someone who is not office bound as I have spent most of my time in the visipol (visible policing) environment,” said Mahlatshana.
“I prefer to be out there engaging communities. I believe constructive criticism is the basic foundation to fix the broken image of the police,” he said.
Mahlatshana said he will ensure that “paramount professionalism” is rendered at the station.
He called on residents of the area not to “lose hope” as police are there to deliver on their mandate.
“As residents of this area, you’re the ones who fought to have this station fight for your interest. I will appeal to you not to be shy or ashamed to name and shame individuals that are not doing what they are supposed to do,” said Mahlatshana.
He said they have an internal process to deal with “unbecoming behaviour” from the officers.
Mahlatshana said he will work hard to ensure he gets back the “broken trust” in this community.
Mahlatshana has previously been a station commander in Paarl, while he also acted in the same position in Bellville between 2018 and 2019.
