Lwandle residents are reeling after a man was gunned down and two other people were wounded in a crossfire on Thursday 4 April.

A 37-year-old man died on the scene at the corner of Malunga and Racaza streets in Lwandle. The motive is unclear.

A resident, who only identified himself as Lwazi, said the deceased was shot in the upper body.

“I don’t know what happened, but I suspect it was a robbery,” he said. “Crime levels are too high here. Every week there’s a shooting.”

Lwazi said he heard that the other two people were injured. “I’m not sure when the incident occurred. When I arrived it was after 17:00 and I saw people and police vans standing there. Then I saw the body of a man covered.”

He added that he did not stay too long at the scene, describing Lwandle as dangerous.

According to Lwazi, people who commit crimes in the area come from the neighbouring areas, such as Khayelitsha, Kraaifontein and Philippi. He urged officers to be more visible.

Lwandle Police Station spokesperson Sgt Mthokozisi Gama confirmed the incident. He said officers are still searching for the suspects.

“The officers heard gunshots not far from the police station and quickly went to investigate. On their arrival on the corner of Malunga and Racaza streets, the officers found the lifeless body of a man who was later identified.

“As officers were busy on the crime scene community members brought a four-year-old child who was shot in the left leg. They (the officers) were also alerted to a 19-year-old shot in the left ankle. They were both rushed to hospital.”

Gama added both shooting victims were male.

He said a case of murder and attempted murder was opened and was being investigated by Lwandle police detectives.

Gama said the officers found four cartridges and two projectiles at the scene. The suspects involved were unknown at this stage and the motive of the killing had yet to be established.

Lwandle police detectives appeal to anyone who may have information on the whereabouts of the suspects to contact the Lwandle Police Station or the Crime Stop number, 08600 10111.
