The Nyanga Community Policing Forum is appealing to the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, to deploy more police units to Nyanga in a bid to combat the spate of killings in this Cape Town township. This after three people were shot and killed at Ntlangano Crescent, Nyanga on Sunday 15 October. The motive behind the shooting is still unknown.

The latest incident occurs just days after two men were shot and killed in Crossroads, which also falls under the Nyanga police precinct.

Nyanga CPF secretary Dumisani Qwebe said crime in the area is getting out of hand and needs urgent intervention, and added that shooting in the area was becoming the norm these days.

"We also need the officers to conduct a proper investigation of all the Somali-owned shops," said Qwebe, who stated that officers alone cannot win the battle to fight crime in the communities.

"In most cases these incidents occur not too far from their businesses or their (Somali) names are always linked to the incidents. We don’t want to speculate but we appeal the officers to investigate them."

Provincial police spokesperson Col Andre Traut confirmed the incident and said three men were gunned down on Sunday 15 October in what they believe could be linked to extortion or a possible retaliation attack.

“The three [yet to be identified] victims were ambushed by their killers around 16:00 in Ntlangano Crescent and killed on the scene," he said.

"One of the victims was found in his white Toyota Avanza, one next to the vehicle and another in a tailoring business operating from a container in the street.”

Any person who can shed light on the circumstances of the case is kindly requested to contact the police by calling Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or using the My SAPS mobile application. Callers may remain anonymous.
