“Shootings in Asanda Village are our daily bread. We know that every weekend something is going to happen,” said Pam Swartbooi following a shooting incident on Monday 18 March.
It is alleged two people were gunned down in Mbiko Street while inside their shack shortly before 22:00. A third person sustained injuries and was taken to hospital.
Lwandle Police Station spokesperson Sgt Mthokozisi Gama confirmed the incident. He added that crime-scene experts searched for suspects involved in the shooting. “Two unknown men knocked at the door, and when they entered the shack, they asked for the two deceased people. Immediately, they took out firearms and shot the three people. Two of them died on the scene while the third victim survived and was later taken to Hottentots Hollard Hospital for medical assistance,” said Gama, adding that a case of murder and attempted murder was opened.
Meanwhile, the shooting has sent shivers in the community.
“We are scared. We don’t know what will happen next. I’ve heard gunshots at night but I didn’t go out to check. I went to the scene this morning but I didn’t see the bodies because they were gone already,” Swartbooi shared with City Vision on Tuesday 19 March.
While the motive is unknown, Swaartbooi believes it was an organised hit. “I think they knew who they were looking for. The fact that they asked for their names suggests that they knew who they were looking for. Maybe the third person was hit in a crossfire,” she explained.
Swaartbooi attributed the rise in criminal activities in the area to a lack of police resources. However, she paid homage to the officers for going the extra mile with limited resources.
“There are too many guns on the streets here. Some criminals are coming from Khayelitsha and other neighbouring areas to commit crime here. We need more officers and police vans to assist,” she said.
She implored the community to report any wrongdoing to the police to turn the tide against crime.
Police are appealing to witness to contact Lwandle Police Detective Sgt Arnold Woodward on 021 845 2060 or 08600 10111.
