SPAR Western Cape donated 22 000 packs of Petals sanitary pads to the Boland Veterans Cricket Association (BVCA) at the SPAR Distribution Centre recently.

“SPAR is proud to be associated with the Boland Cricket Veterans’ Dignity Project through our SPAR women’s road race, again this year,” said Elsabe van Zyl-Felix, advertising manager for SPAR Western Cape at the handover. “It’s so important to have these male voices in the space where we are endeavouring to create equal opportunities for women.”

The BVCA is committed to development within sport. They believe that “giving back” starts with their players. In the development of women’s cricket, they feel strongly that it is a human right for girls not to miss out on equal opportunity because of period poverty.

Along with the sanitary pad drive, that distributes sanitary pads to girls in need, the organisation’s Dignity Programme also offers a skill-set programme, promoting a healthy lifestyle and more.

Said James Albanie, seasoned Boland veteran player and coach who heads up the Dignity Programme: “We value this generous donation. It forms such an important part of the work that we are doing. It is so well received in the communities.

“Thanks to this sizeable donation, we have been able to extend our reach in the Boland to places like Elands Bay, Wupperthal and deep rural areas. We have encouraged EP and Border veterans to do the same. We are able to target a broader sporting base and have now included girls playing rugby and baseball.”

This is the third year SPAR Western Cape has supported the efforts of the Boland Cricket Veterans’ Dignity Project.
