In a riveting Super League A clash at Gustrouw sports grounds, St George’s RFC emerged victorious against UCT in a battle that showcased the best of local rugby talent.

Despite the challenging conditions of a windy Strand, both teams displayed commendable skill and determination throughout the match.

The standout performance of the day came from St George’s eighthman Riyaad Adams, whose exceptional play left a lasting impression on spectators. However, it was the cohesive effort of the entire St George’s squad that ultimately secured their triumph.

Despite UCT’s well-organised structured play, they found themselves unable to match the relentless pace and creativity of the home side.

In a tightly contested affair, the Lulu Boys emerged triumphant with a final scoreline of 32-28.

The try-scoring heroes for St George’s included Adams, Junaid Phillips, Duwayne Raubenheimer, Fabian Filander, and Curtley Hendrikse, whose contributions were instrumental in securing the victory.

Hendrikse also proved his accuracy with the boot, adding crucial penalties and conversions to bolster his team’s tally.

As the dust settles on this thrilling encounter, both teams can take pride in their efforts, knowing that they have provided fans with a memorable display of rugby prowess.

With the derby against Helderberg looming on the horizon, the Lulu Boys will look to carry the momentum from this victory forward as they continue their pursuit of success in the season ahead.

St George’s have a bye this weekend and will prepare for the derby against Berge on Saturday 11 May.

In the other local Super League A weekend game, Helderberg lost by 10 points against False Bay.

Aside for the first 20 minutes in which Berge was in control, False Bay set the tone at their home ground in Constantia on Saturday.

After nine minutes Berge were awarded a penalty, which flyhalf Darren Hendricks slotted (0-3). In the 17th minute left wing Hughwan Engelbrecht finished a move to touch down for Berge’s first try (0-8).

In the 24th minute, False Bay scored a converted try (7-8). Two minutes later, the hosts took the lead with a drop goal by their fullback (10-8).

In the 50th minute, the home team slotted another penalty (13-8). In the 53rd minute, their left wing touched down in the corner (18-8) and in the 60th minute, Berge’s brilliant fullback Jeandre Lukas ran in a brilliant try and Hendricks added the extras (18-15). Things were looking better for Berge with a reshuffled backline, but mistakes kept creeping in.

Barely three minutes before the final whistle, False Bay scored their third try to secure the 25-15 victory.
