A section of Beach Road in Gordon’s Bay was waterlogged on Friday morning (3 May) following a burst pipe in the vicinity, resulting in pools of water that blocked access to several businesses for several hours.
According to one of the shop owners, recent work by the City of Cape Town along main beach, which comprised the dune-rehabilitation works, resulted in the blockage of stormwater outlets.
“This is the reason there is no escape for the water flow,” said the business owner, who asked not to be named. “Our businesses are now being affected negatively. With the rainy season on us it surely will only worsen, unless something is done to address this problem.”
Zahid Badroodien, Mayoral Committee member for Water and Sanitation, said the City’s teams attended to a pipe burst that occurred in Miller Road and were deployed at 07:00. The maintenance team completed the job only later the afternoon.
The City was unable to provide comment on the effects of the dune rehabilitation project and whether the flooding was the cause of the blocked stormwater outlets.
