Paul Roos duo wins gold in China

Steffan Thielen and Rohan van Loggerenberg, both Grade 12 learners at Paul Roos Gymnasium, represented South Africa at the Beijing Youth Science Creation Competition (BYSCC) in China from Thursday 28 March to Monday 1 April. They were nominated by a panel of academics and professionals at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Science Fair (ISF) last October. The duo showcased their research project, “Optimisation of Artificial Neural Network training”, at the 43rd BYSCC, which was hosted by the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. They were awarded gold medals for their project. A total of 199 projects were submitted by Beijing students, with 21 projects submitted by participants from other countries, including the Czech Republic, Indonesia, Italy, Russia, South Africa and Thailand. Registration to take part in the 2024 Eskom Expo is open. Learners from Grade 4 to 12, along with TVET college learners (NC2 to NC4), can register their research projects by visiting www.exposcience.co.za.
