Runners interested in entering the Lemo Mall Mangaung Marathon, which is a qualifier for this year’s Comrades Marathon, have until Tuesday, 30 April, to register.

They have six days left to beat the deadline for entering the inaugural Mangaung Marathon, with ultimate Comrades qualification.

The marathon’s slogan is “Your Roots, Our Route”, and will see athletes pace through the streets on 4 May. They will propel their efforts to win in the four categories: the 42,2 km, 21,1 km, 10 km and the 5 km fun run.

Zizipho Majokweni, public relations officer, said prize monies total R66 600, with the winners, both males and females, in three categories guaranteed equal prize monies.

“We are targeting 1 200 runners. We have achieved about 60% of our goal, with about 720 runners already registered ahead of the registration deadline.

“This is very promising as runners usually sign up closer to the deadline,” said Majokweni, further encouraging runners with aspirations to qualify for the Comrades to take full advantage entering the Mangaung Marathon before the close of registration.

This year’s Comrades will be an up-run, from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.

It is all systems go for the Mangaung Marathon’s first edition.

Majokweni has confirmed that the Mangaung Metro Municipality has approved the routes for the marathon, which will start and finish at the Lemo Mall in Dr Belcher Road.

Confirming the event’s merit, Comrades Marathon running legend Louis Massyn is one the ambassadors for the upcoming Mangaung Marathon.
