A 45-year-old man appeared in the Hermanus Magistrates’ Court last week after he was arrested in connection with the rape of a 13-year-old girl.
Sergeant Abigail Naidoo, spokesperson for the Overberg Police District, reports that the victim recently decided to break her silence regarding the alleged rapes that had started in 2020 when she was only nine years old.
“She informed her mother that she had allegedly been raped repeatedly over a period of time by a family friend,” she said.
“This reportedly occurred at several different locations on various occasions, the last on 10 April at 21:00.
“The mother brought the victim to the Hermanus Police Station on 17 April to register the case. The victim was taken to Hermanus Hospital for a medical examination.”
The man was arrested and charged with one count of rape. This, said Naidoo, was done because the victim could not recall how many times she had been raped, but there was a possibility that more charges would be added at a later stage.
The docket had been transferred to the Hermanus Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Crimes (FCS) unit for further investigation.
