Umzimvubu Local Municipality mayor, Councillor Zukiswa Ndevu, handed over 20 laptops to four schools under this municipality that did very well in the final results of 2023.

They also received wi-fi routers with 15GB and printers.

According to the statement issued by senior manager and Special Programmes Unit, Nokhanyo Zembe, this programme is done by this municipality annually. They choose two schools in Kwa Bhaca (Mount Frere), and two schools from Mount Ayliff (Emaxesibeni).

“The intention of this programme is to ensure learners know how to use technology because the whole world is now using it. They hope that this equipment will assist them so that they can get good results and know more about technology.

The schools benefiting this year are Jojo Senior Secondary School, Mbodleni Senior Secondary School, Gillespie Primary School, and Mbodleni Primary School.

Principal Wiseman Mnganyana of Jojo Senior Secondary School, located in Maxesibeni (Mount Ayliff), confirmed that they had received five laptops from this municipality.

He also said it was not the first time they had received this gift; previously they were given five, but these were stolen during a break-in at the school.

“It will be easy for our learners now to do research, because we were also given a wi-fi router with 15GB, and a printer. Our children were struggling before as we know that nowadays people are using technology most of the time. It will also be easy for us to assist those who want to apply to tertiary institutions, because some of them do not manage to apply because of the lack of resources and money to do that,” said Mnganyana.

According to Mnganyana, his school had obtained 91,2 percent in the 2023 matric results. He stated that this year they are targeting 100 percent, and are working hard to achieve that.

“We are spending our time with Grade 12 learners, because we want to achieve 100 percent. Even during weekends we are always here at school; we are glad that we managed to have a top achiever, Mcoseleli Gwanya, who represented us in the Provincial Awards. This year we are working hard to ensure that we have a top achiever who will go to national level.”
