RELATIVES of Nomvula Solani (72), from Cumakala locality in Lady Frere, want justice to take its course in the sentencing of suspects accused of allegedly murdering her and stealing her stokvel money.
A nephew of the deceased, Olwethu Solani (27), and grandchild of the deceased, Simphiwe Solani (21), and their friend, Busani Ndlela, briefly appeared in Lady Frere for murdering and robbing Nomvula.
Their case was postponed until May 24, 2024 for further investigation.
According to Nomvula’s relative, Siphiwo Nyumbeka, the family was still negotiating about the date of her burial.
He said his aunt received a sum of R10 000 from the stokvel, which she was going to use to build a rondavel.
He claims that before she received her money, Olwethu, one of the accused, went to borrow some money from her which she refused, and this led them to having a misunderstanding.
“The deceased was [supposed] to go to Hlalanathi where elderly people meet, to pay her stokvel for groceries the following day, but she did not arrive,” said Nyumbeka.
He added that after the community saw that Nomvula was missing, they started searching for her.
According to him, when they went to her rondavel, they found that it was locked with two locks, which was strange.
He alleges that some of the relatives opened those locks, and when they entered found blood stains on the floor. Nyumbeka further claimed that the search led them to a shallow grave in Nomvula’s garden.
“When we dug it up we found the body of the deceased wrapped in some blankets. We are still shocked about this,” he added.
Spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority, Luxolo Tyali, confirmed that Ndlela was not charged.
