EASTERN Cape Department of Health MEC, Nomakhosazana Meth, has learnt with shock of the killing of a male security guard, Dakile Ngobe (40), and a robbery at Maqanyeni Clinic in Ngqeleni, last week.

It is alleged that perpetrators shot and killed the security guard, and fled with five computers from this clinic.

Meth’s spokesperson, Mkhululi Ndamase, confirmed that the deceased was with his female colleague, who was left traumatised when this incident happened.

Meth condemned the incident, stating that they had learnt with shock of the killing of the security guard at the hands of vicious criminals, with no regard for human life.

“We send our deepest condolences to his family, colleagues, and friends; may his soul rest in peace. We are calling on the police to leave no stone unturned in their efforts to bring these criminals to book. Communities should also work with authorities to ensure that the people behind this heinous crime are arrested.

“When our facilities and healthcare workers are attacked, it is the calling on communities to protect our staff, including security guards at our facilities,” said Meth.

She added that the department also provided counselling services to traumatised staff. She delegated acting head of department, Miyakazi Nokwe, to visit the family of the slain security guard and his colleague.

Nokwe and a team of senior departmental officials visited the two families last week.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, confirmed the incident, stating that a security guard (40) who was on guard duty at Maqanyeni clinic in Ngqelenu, was fatally shot after four suspects demanded entry on April 26, at around 23:00. Upon the guard’s refusal, one suspect opened fire killing instantly killing Ngobe.

“Unknown suspects allegedly took away five computers from the clinic and vanished. No one has been arrested yet, and investigations continue,” said Naidu.
