YOUNG Tigers netball team were crowned the champions of the annual Viedgesville tournament this past Sunday.

Young Tigers won R5 000, a trophy, kit, and gold medals.

The tournament started in 2023, and was facilitated by six Viedgesville community members, including Diniso Sibonisiwe, Diniso Xola, Zimasa Tshayingwe, Sakhi Legend Pasiwe, Sisipo Sibango and Norma Taliwe.

One of the organisers, Sibonisiwe Diniso, said their main objectives of starting the tournament were to be able to groom young players, and educate young boys and females about gender-based violence.

Diniso said their aim is to encourage development of sport in Mthatha at large, and give young stars an opportunity to showcase their skills on the field.

In the soccer component, Fairfield FC were crowned champions, and walked away with an amount of R15 000, a trophy, a gold medal, and kit.

Some of the players participating in this tournament in soccer are playing for teams in the ABC Motsepe League, Regional League, and some local teams.

The off-season community tournaments, like the annual Viedgesville tournament, play a crucial role in bringing the community together and keeping the youth and women constructively engaged during weekends.
