The u/19 rugby team of Grey High has good momentum going into the next round of inter-school matches.

Grey takes on Queen’s College at home in Gqeberha this coming Saturday, after two excellent victories last week.

The annual Grey Festival was a huge success, with matches played on Thursday and Saturday.

Grey beat St John’s College (Johannesburg) 33–15 on the first day and also got the better of Graeme College (Makhanda) in the final match on the last day. Grey won 29–7.

These were matches in which Grey played with a lot of freedom and scored some very good tries.

These two solid performances will give the Grey boys a lot of confidence to take on Queen’s.

It also helps that Grey will play in front of their home crowd again. The match against St John’s was only the second home game of the year for Grey.

The supporters were clearly well pleased with the victories at the festival and will look forward to more of the same against Queen’s.

Grey received many accolades for the smooth running of the event. With a lot of tournaments being played these days, it is not easy for any school to successfully host a tournament of this nature.

It was another few days when camaraderie was built among diverse groups from all over the country.

The Eastern Province (EP) selectors will keep a close eye on the upcoming inter-school matches, but after yesterday they have a better idea of which players may represent the province this year.

A further round of trial matches took place at the fields of Marlow in Nxuba (Cradock) yesterday. There were u/18 and u/16 matches played, which gave the selectors a lot to think about.

On May 18 the annual Meyer Sauerman Tournament will be held, when selectors will take another good look at the available talent.

The Grant Khomo u/16 Week will be hosted by EP at Grey this year, starting on June 17.

The EP u/18 squad will have to travel to Gauteng for this year’s Craven Week, which starts on June 24.

They take on their provincial neighbour, Border, on the first day. Monument High in Krugersdorp is hosting the prestigious event this year.
