His talent and passion for football has earned Abongile Ngamlana a spot in the group of young South Africans that have been invited to play in Turkey this year, and he couldn’t be more excited.
Born and bred in New Brighton, 18-year-old Ngamlana kicked his first ball at just eight, through the influence of his former soccer player father, Malibongwe Ngalo, who has since passed away.
“I remember wanting to be just like him, and play just as well. So, when the opportunity presented itself in primary school, it was like a dream come true for me,” said Ngamlana.
His talent quickly got him scouted to join the Chippa United u/18 club.
“I love playing soccer; it’s like I can completely be myself on the field; I am free to let out my best self. I want to become a professional football player one day, I’m so glad my mother supports my dreams,” he said.
His mother, Xoliswa Ngamlana, is her only child’s biggest cheerleader, but stresses the importance of having formal education. “She always tells me she will allow me to pursue my soccer dreams if I balance them with school, so I do my best in school, just like I do on the field,” Ngamlana proudly added.
Ngamlana trialled at The Football Project, and was selected by Coach Eldon Smith to be part of the Africa to Europe Tour in Turkey, in March.
“When I got the email, I couldn’t believe it! I was so excited and shared the news with my mother who was just as excited. It would be my first time ever leaving the country; I really hope I am able to raise enough funds to go,” Ngamlana shared.
To make this trip, Ngamlana needs as much financial help as possible, and asked that anyone who is willing to help, to please reach out.
“No amount is too little, I would really appreciate the help,” the hopeful teen said.
Ngamlana will be travelling with a group of players that have been selected from different provinces, the coach, and manager of the team.
