Acting District Commissioner for Nelson Mandela Bay, Brig Ronald Koll, commended the actions of two off-duty Flying Squad members who immediately sprang into action after receiving information of a truck hijacking in Newton Park yesterday morning, October 23.
According to police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, it is alleged that at about 10:10, a truck loaded with appliances was hijacked in Pickering Street by two unknown men.
"The Flying Squad members immediately received information of the hijacking and reacted.
"The truck and the suspect vehicle, a Toyota Quantum, were spotted and trailed. As soon as the suspects realised that the members were following them in their private vehicles, they split up," said Naidu.
Naidu said, "Backup was requested, and the vehicles were cornered at the intersection of Circular Drive and Henry Botha Drive in Walmer. When the truck stopped, two suspects got off and ran towards Charlo."
Naidu further said, "With the assistance of the K9 unit and a private security company, one fleeing suspect was arrested, and a 9mm pistol was also recovered."
Five suspects were apprehended, and the hijacked truck with all its contents was recovered.
"The suspects aged between 26-41 years old are detained on charges of vehicle hijacking, possession of suspected stolen property, attempted murder, kidnapping and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition."
Brig Koll applauded the bravery and selflessness of the officers, their colleagues, and the security sector.
"The act of courage serves as a testament to the fact that police officers are never off duty," said Koll.
