Amahle Sigam (20) appeared in the New Brighton Magistrate's Court today, 29 June for allegedly kidnapping a baby boy in Kenako Mall, Gqeberha in November 2022.

At the time of the alleged crime, Baby Jali was just four days old.

The baby boy's mother, Noncedo Jali (33), gave birth to him at the Dora Nginza Hospital on 22 November 2022. She was then discharged on 27 November 2022.

According to earlier police reports, Jali went to the Kenako Mall to withdraw money to purchase a few baby items and was accompanied by an unknown woman, allegedly sent by her family to assist her with the baby.

The unknown woman then disappeared with 4-day-old Baby Jali.

Police spokesperson, Captain André Beetge, said on Tuesday, June 27 - seven months after the kidnapping - alert staff at Dora Nginza Hospital contacted the police after a woman attempted to register the baby boy using fictitious paperwork.

"The FCS unit arrested the suspect and charged her with kidnapping. The baby was found in her care. The child is in the custody of social workers until the preliminary investigation has been finalised," said Beetge.

"Additional charges may be added as the investigation unfolds," Beetge added.

During today's court proceedings Sigam was limping and moaned in pain. Her mother, who was very emotional, tried to communicate with her young daughter while she was being escorted back to the holding cells by police.

Sigam will remain in police custody and is expected to appear in the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, July 6 as her case requires to be profiled.

According to the state prosecutor, Sigam has no previous convictions.

Sigam opted to use legal aid for representation in the matter.

Family members of the accused were present at her first court appearance, but refused to comment on the charges brought against her.
