Manenberg police have opened an inquest docket into an attack on Metro police officers who were on patrol in the area amid ongoing gang violence.
On Tuesday 17 October, at 18:15, two men aged 35 and 37 were shot, the former fatally.
"It is alleged that the 37-year-old man was walking down Manenberg Avenue towards the circle, when known people opened fire on him, hitting him in the lower back and right shoulder," says Manenberg police spokesperson, Capt Ian Bennett. "He ran home where he collapsed. The suspects fled the scene on foot."
At 18:25 Metro police were busy with high-density patrols in The Downs Road, Manenberg.
"As they patrolled Rio Grande Road they responded to the sounds of gunfire," Bennett said. "As the marked Metro police vehicle entered into The Downs Road they spotted the 35-year-old man in a crouched position randomly firing shots.
"When he saw the marked vehicle he turned and fired shots at the Metro police officers. They returned fire and the suspect ran into Zaghrah Close, where he collapsed. He succumbed to gunshot wounds to his chest. A 9mm CZ pistol with six 9mm rounds was recovered on him."
Law Enforcement Advancement Plan officers have been deployed alongside Metro Police in a bid to help restore calm to Manenberg, following what is described as a bloodbath over the last few days.

Mayco Member for Safety and Security JP Smith said officers are deployed on a 24 hour shift system to assist police with crime prevention and to stabilise the gang violence.
"The City is constantly investing in human resources, but also technology to improve our enforcement outcomes and build safer communities," he said. "This includes CCTV, the introduction of dashcams and bodycams, our Emergency Policing Incident Control (EPIC) system, gunshot detection technology and more."
A case of attempted murder and an inquest docket was opened for investigation as a result of the attack on police officers.
Station commander Brig Sanele Zama has condemned the attack on the Metro police officers.
"Attack on any police officers will not be tolerated," said Bennett. "Policing will be increased and Police will clamp down on gang violence."
