  • A 30-year-old man was killed by a train on Monday morning, 25 March.
  • The incident occurred around 06:00 between Rondebosch and Rosebank Railway Stations.
  • The train was travelling from Fish Hoek to Cape Town at the time of the incident.

Rondebosch police and the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) confirmed a 30-year-old man was killed by a train on Monday morning, 25 March, between Rondebosch and Rosebank Railway Stations.

“Around 06:00, the police service’s Retreat Metro Rail [division]  was informed of the incident between Rondebosch and Rosebank Railway Station and responded accordingly,” said Rondebosch police spokesperson WO Lyndon Sisam. “On police’s arrival they saw the body of an adult male.”

The police were informed by the train driver that she was travelling from Fish Hoek to Cape Town when she saw someone get onto the tracks. She blew the siren, applied the brakes but still hit the person.

Prasa spokesperson Zinobulali Mihi confirmed the incident on the Southern Line, saying it caused interruptions. “There were train delays of approximately 60 minutes,” she said. “The service was recovered within an hour of the incident’s occurrence.”

The person was declared dead by Metro Ambulance Services on the scene and later identified by his next of kin. An inquest docket was registered at Rondebosch Police Station for further investigation.
