A young woman from Bishop Lavis who just returned from a dance competition in Germany says it was an experience of a lifetime.
Riana Jacobs and her partner, Morgan Achmat, took part in the under-21 World Championship in Muelheim. “This is a something I will never forget,” she said. “We were 33 couples and we danced as if we never danced before and gave our best as usual.
“Although we did not make it to the quarter-final, it felt as if I was dancing in the final and my dream came true.”
Jacobs said she and Achmat learnt much on their journey. “We especially learnt a lot from Karabo Morake, a South African adult championship dancer who is currently staying in Germany.
“He was an inspirational speaker and mentor and so much more,” she said, “and he changed me into a diva on the dance floor, especially in Latin-American. I personally learnt that international competition is tough and needs to be on point. Our competitors are very good dancers and it seemed as if they didn’t even get tired.”
According to Jacobs, who has just finished her second year of nursing studies, she and Achmat can grow more by giving feedback to their coaches on what they experienced.
“We are determined to grow more, but for now the studies and the dancing should be balanced out.”
So what next? “We don’t know yet, but we are waiting for the South African results for 2023 to see if we qualified to represent the Republic of South Africa again in 2024. But then it will be in the Adult Championship Section, because I am turning 21 in August. So hopefully, God-willing, the international stage will see us again.”
