An organisation focusing on the rights of the LGBTQ+ community says it is deeply saddened by the death of Diego Jacobs (21) from Delft that was allegedly murdered because he is gay.
Jacobs was on a night out when he was approached by a person who taunted him in the past for being gay and called him a “moffie”. A fight broke out and Jacobs was stabbed and later died of his wounds.
Nazeem Southgate from Drag Cartel says it is a sad moment. “Yes, this is such a sad moment for us all. Especially in the time that we are living where you would think with education being much more accessible. Even through social platforms you would think as humanity we would be more susceptible to understand each other, yet it seems to me that things are becoming worse by the day, this is truly sad. That being said, I believe that each of us are responsible for changing this narrative by futher educating and pushing to create change,” says Southgate.
According to him he did not personally know Jacobs but can resonate with what he may have gone through.
“It’s a slippery slope when it comes to this, often by being different you already stand out and for some people looking at people ‘living their truth’ can been very difficult, so that in itself is something that is very subjective. That being said for those young people facing adversity, I think it is important to find spaces where they are able to build genuine and healthy relationships where they can stand together and support each other. It may be a cliche but there most definitely is strength in numbers, and we as a united community need to stand up for each other.
“Education begins at home and for those individuals who find the need to taunt, verbally abuse and ridicule others it’s important that we send the right messages so they can gain understanding in order to be curbed. Schools, religious organisations, government and the corporate sectors all have a very important role to play in passing on this message,” says Southgate.
