One of the biggest packers of fruit in the Sarah Baartman district, recently ploughed back into the community by donating a new netball court to benefit the school community.

The Sundays River Citrus Company (SRCC) Foundation installed the new netball court at Rietberg Primary School in Kirkwood.

According to the SRCC Foundation Chairman, Bob Maske, the foundation has a big responsibility in Kirkwood as it forms a big part of the community and is involved in various development programmes in the Sundays River Valley.

“We believe in ploughing money into education and educating kids is the future of this valley. We are involved in feeding schemes, we support the local schools, we give computer access to children, and we have donated buses that are used for extramural activities in this valley,” he explained.

Rietberg Primary School Principal, Regina Hobbs said that this initiative was greatly received by the learners.

“Our kids are so fond of sports, but we didn’t have the resources,” she said. She also stated that these courts give hope to learners who may not be academically inclined to participate and thrive in sports.

“The long-term goal is to bring these girls from the level they are at present to a top level. We want to see them play for the SPAR Proteas,” she said.

Hobbs further stated that that netball court is not only for the learners, but it is also available to the community.

“The community is very welcome to come and play at our school. We would also like the members of the community to come and assist us to maintain the court for many years to come.”

The Department of Education’s representative at the unveiling event, Thobeka Stokwe, also reiterated that the netball court is open to the community. She added that there are other SRCC Foundation initiatives on the cards at the Mhlophekazi Primary School in Kirkwood.

“They are also busy with the same project there because these recreational facilities are also assisting learners from other areas. If we keep our kids occupied and ensure that they are developed holistically, social ills can be eradicated,” said Stokwe.
