“Fire season is in full swing here in the Cape Winelands District and our Fire Services have, over the last 24 hours, attended to a number of fires including one in Franschhoek and this morning’s fire in the area of Paarl Mountain, both of which have been successfully managed and contained,” warns the Cape Winelands District Municipality’s Executive Mayor, Elna von Schlicht
“Over the next few days, the temperature is going to soar to above the 40°C mark. This means that we will see an increase in veld fires.”
“It is vital that we stay safe during this hot weather, part of that means that we should not make fires in places that are close to the veld, even when there are facilities available, rather pack a picnic when visiting our natural spaces.”
The public is advised to remember that the heat is dangerous, drink a lot of cool water, and make sure to wear a hat and sunblock when outdoors.
Anyone can report a wildfire. In the Cape Winelands the number to call is 021 887 4446, or contact your nearest authority.”
