You’re not allowed to remove stones or plants from a wilderness area, but what about a hungry dog? Esma Marnewick pondered this question in the Richtersveld.

Our 10-year-old daughter Emilie saw it first. It skulked off as we drove into the De Hoop campsite in the |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park, ribs bulging against its skin. Scrawny, it looked like a cross between a greyhound and a Canis africanis.

Once we’d set up camp, Emilie and Bella (7) tried to lure it closer. It kept a safe distance.
