Toyota Hilux Champ: Going back to basics

At first glance, it might look as odd as an English bulldog, but its mission is just as noble as that of the stout-hearted breed.

Toyota unveiled its IMV 0 concept vehicle in December 2022. At the reveal, Akio Toyoda, the chairman of Toyota and grandson of Toyota Motors’ founder, Kiichiro Toyoda, declared that this bakkie embodies Toyota’s original purpose: to build affordable and reliable vehicles. 

The Toyota Hilux Champ, as the IMV 0 has been renamed, is based on the familiar Hilux, but with simplified bodywork and stripped of all unnecessary electronic gadgets – retaining only airbags, anti-lock brakes and brake force distribution. Only the driver gets an electric window.
