Busisiwe Mkhwebane planted her flag on the summit of martyrs, and claimed grand conspiracies against her. But really, she was her own worst enemy, argues Kyle Cowan.
One of the nicest things a source in the Public Protector's office ever said to me about Busisiwe Mkhwebane was that she was "unpleasant at times".
Mkhwebane has always presented herself as a champion of the poor, a hard-working servant of the mistreated and downtrodden. Of course, this is a good interpretation of the purpose of a Public Protector – to be a shield and saviour from the worst excesses of political power.
