Global trends in trust and technology combined with local political polarisation – and the need for foreign money – means South Africa needs very many foreign election observers in 2024, writes Phillip de Wet.

President Cyril Ramaphosa was terribly annoyed when the DA asked rich countries for help monitoring the elections. Both the ANC and the MK Party want to use that request to define the DA as a party selling South Africa out to foreign powers.
