The wait is almost over for the Class of 2023 as they prepare to receive their National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination results nearly six weeks after the last exam paper was written.
Nearly one million matric candidates sat for their final exams between 30 October and 6 December.
Umalusi, the quality assurance body tasked with assessing the credibility and integrity of the results, has given the go-ahead for the release of the results.
When will the matric results be published?
Matric candidates who wrote the exams through the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) can access their results online now, while public school system results will be published online at 06:00 on Friday, 19 January for eight out of nine provinces.
The Western Cape will publish its results at 16:00 the same day.
Where and how can I access my matric results?
To access your matric results online, you can type your examination number into News24's matric results portal.
It's important to note that the portal will only display the results of those who agreed to have their results published in the media in compliance with the Protection of Personal Information (POPI) Act.
Individuals who did not opt in will have to contact their school or provincial education department for their results.
Results may be omitted due to technical reasons.
What if I want to improve my matric results?
If you're not satisfied with your results, the next opportunity to complete or improve your results is in June 2024. According to the Department of Basic Education (DBE), you can register for the June NSC exams online or at a district office by no later than 8 February 2024.
What other deadlines do I need to know?
Pupils who need academic funding for the year are urged to submit their applications to the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) with all the required supporting documents by no later than 31 January 2024.

Admission to bachelor studies
- Must obtain at least 40% for the candidate's home language (this is compulsory);
- Must obtain at least 50% for the candidate's four other subjects, excluding life orientation
- Must obtain at least 30% for the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution;
- Must obtain at least 30% for one other subject; and
- Must pass at least six of the seven subjects.
Admission to diploma studies - Must obtain at least 40% for the candidate's home language (this is compulsory);
- Must obtain at least 40% for three of other subjects, excluding life orientation;
- Must obtain at least 30% for the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution;
- Must obtain at least 30% for one other subject; and
- Must pass at least six of the seven subjects.
Admission to higher certificate studies
- Must obtain at least 40% for the candidate's home language (this is compulsory);
- Must obtain at least 30% for the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution;
- Must obtain at least 40% for two other subjects;
- Must obtain at least 30% for three other subjects; and
- Must pass at least six of the seven subjects.
