Few things are as authentically South African as our love for a unifying sport and a hungry need for speed. Combining these two loves with a refreshing take on the age-old sport of horse racing, the Global Team Horse Racing (GTH) group are re-inventing the thrilling sport – making it a fun time for the entire family.
While we’ve all heard of racehorses who’ve made incredible names for themselves and became emblems in Hollywood films like Secretariat, Man O’ War, and Seabiscuit, SA may have its very own iconic champion steed on its hand.
A racehorse was recently caught on a speed camera well-exceeding and breaking the speed limit of 60 km/h while galloping westbound on Barkston drive in Blairgowrie. The speedy equine has been aptly named Speedbreaker for its impressive horsepower and, well, speed.
The majestic thoroughbred appeared to be getting its legs primed and ready for future races with GTH.
So, how does GTH work?
- Races see teams of 10 jockeys competing in head-to-head race meetings – scoring points for each race.
- Eight runners compete in each race (4 runners per team) balanced with the horses matched and grouped according to their ability.
- Races take place over a 2.5-hour run – far quicker than a standard 6-hour meeting.
- The final race sees double points on offer for both teams – creating heightened anticipation with race meetings going down to the wire.
- The two highest-scoring teams then battle it out in an epic and nail-biting grand finale.
Angus Campbell, the marketing director of GTH, explains: “While there are still successful international signature horse racing events like the Melbourne Cup, The Kentucky Derby, The Dubai World Cup, and the Durban July, the truth is that horse racing, like all sporting entertainment businesses, needs rejuvenation to appeal to modern audiences. GTH is a racing revolution, it’s a new and improved product changing the perception of what a day at the races is. We offer a fast, team-based, easy to understand, super entertaining version of racing.”
“We’re addressing the post-Covid generation who want something different. Our fans want to get out, be in the fresh air, in a safe environment with their family, and that’s exactly what GTH provides.”
But, just because GTH offers a safe and fun outdoor environment for you and the family to enjoy the splendour of horse racing, doesn’t mean you can’t catch up on the action on the go. They strive to merge live and digital elements into an exciting entertainment product that is broadcast with a multi-platform approach – attracting and engaging younger and more diverse audiences and keeping their fan base connected globally.
Who knows? Speedbreaker could be South Africa’s very own next great Seattle Slew or Winx with the speed it’s already showcasing during road training!
