Naspers Foundry invested R42 million (US$3 million) in Cape Town-founded, WhereIsMyTransport. WhereIsMyTransport is a mobility technology company that improves public transport access in high-growth market cities. It uses data and technology to map formal and informal public transport networks, making public commute more reliable, predictable, safe, inclusive and accessible for millions of people in highly populated megacities.
WhereIsMyTransport’s solution has broad alignment with Naspers investments in food delivery and e-commerce that rely on mobility solutions and focuses on cities in emerging markets. They have mapped the following cities in South Africa: Cape Town, Tshwane, Johannesburg, Durban, Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein, East London, Ekurhuleni and George. Their datasets also power the MyCiti and Gautrain apps.
MyCiTI transit app
Cape Town's MyCiTi is a bus rapid transit service launched in 2010, initially as a shuttle service from a newly-built bus depot in the CBD to Cape Town International Airport. After numerous network expansions, the service covers Cape Town city centre and stretches into many suburban regions, serving over 60 000 passengers a day. Mobility data from WhereIsMyTransport informed the unofficial MyCiti app, developed by Cape Town-based entrepreneur Byron Coetsee to deliver the most up-to-date information possible to commuters.
