Deep in Orlando, just a stone's throw away from the iconic stadium, lays an oasis for young girls and future Banyana Banyana stars made possible with the help of ordinary Nedbank clients.

The oasis: a multi-purpose sports court at Lofentse Girls High School. The court, named after iconic soccer coach Pitso Mosimane, was donated by Nedbank in partnership with Pitso Mosimane Soccer Schools and The Sports Trust.

"Inside this court, I feel like I'm in heaven. I want to play professional soccer and I see myself in America. I want to represent my country and go abroad."
learner and soccer player Thembelihle Jwara.

The work Nedbank does refurbishing sports grounds and donating sports kits is made possible by ordinary Nedbank account holders to donate to the Affinity programme at no additional cost to the client.

“I would like to thank the Nedbank affinity donors for sponsoring the sports court and clothes because in the Township you don't get such things. So I would like to say we thank you as Lofentse and continue sponsoring other schools,” says another learner Malehlohonolo Sebatane.

The multipurpose courts - which can be used for soccer, Netball, basketball, tennis and squash - are also benefiting the community at large.

“Learners are being removed from the streets. Most of the time they spend it at school, even after school. We have the neighbouring schools that come here and participate in their sporting codes. We also have people from the community who are interested [and] now they want to introduce sporting codes we didn't have before,” says principal Rosetta Motsuko.

As??a founding trustee of The Sports Trust, the bank provides support through its Nedbank Sport Affinity and has donated more than R36 million since 1995.

“The relationship is so important because it bridges the gap between communities and gives access to sports in various communities, especially previously disadvantaged communities. Sport encourages kids to come and participate in school and it alleviates absenteeism in schools,” says Simanga Matholeni, the Head of Department for Projects and Stakeholder Relations at the Sports Trust.

Poovi Pillay, Head of Group CSI at Nedbank says supporting sports is important.

“The extraordinary role and power of sport in the mental and physical development of young people is the reason why Nedbank partners with The Sports Trust to enhance education through sport from an early age, Nedbank is one of the founding Trustees of The Sports Trust, and our partnership spans 27 years of working with underprivileged schools and communities throughout South Africa,” says Pillay.
