The Old Fort in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, was once the manifestation of a government actively suppressing human rights.
Human rights campaigners, like Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Joe Slovo, Albertina Sisulu and Fatima Meer, all served time there.
Reminders of the precinct's past are still visible: The crest of the old Transvaal Republic, the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek, with its motto, "Eendragt Maakt Magt (Unity Makes Strength)", above one of the gates. "HOU GESLUIT (Keep Locked)" is stencilled in red on a door behind thick steel bars.
