Parties like the African Transformation Movement (ATM) and the Patriotic Alliance (PA) want to remove the most fundamental of human rights – the right to life – by reintroducing the death penalty.

Corruption-accused former president Jacob Zuma's uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party wants a referendum on the death penalty and the IFP wants to open a "national debate" on the reinstatement of the death penalty.

However, international research shows that the death penalty is not an effective deterrent to crime.
