After meeting with the Durban Chamber of Commerce in February, President Cyril Ramaphosa wrote a letter to eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda informing him of the service delivery issues raised by the sector.

In the letter, Ramaphosa informed Kaunda of his intention to intervene through a Presidential eThekwini Working Group that would attempt to resolve the issues. But, barely a month after that engagement, scenes of Durban descending into chaos played out on television as angry residents burnt tyres and blocked roads, protesting over uncollected refuse strewn across the streets, a lack of water and electricity - amid a SA Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) wage strike.

Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya told journalists on Friday that Ramaphosa was worried about the situation.
