It has taken 11 years, but Johannesburg's prosecutions head, Andrew Chauke, is finally being investigated over his conduct in the State's cases against Crime Intelligence boss Richard Mdluli and the Cato Manor police unit - and now faces suspension.
On Friday, National Director of Public Prosecutions Shamila Batohi wrote to Chauke to inform him she would write to President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday and request he "consider provisionally suspending you from your office as Director of Public Prosecutions, pending an enquiry into your fitness to hold office".
That investigation will focus on two main areas of alleged wrongdoing: the first being the National Prosecuting Authority's (NPA) ultimately invalidated institution of racketeering charges against the police's Cato Manor unit.
