The arrest of a Western Cape police officer for the alleged rape of a woman in a holding cell has raised questions about the safety of women in police custody.
The woman was arrested in Citrusdal for assault and detained in the early hours of Saturday morning, said Independent Police Investigative Directorate spokesperson Phaladi Shuping.
He added: "The police constable allegedly went into the holding cell where the complainant was and raped her. She reported the incident to a police officer, who [had] reported for duty in the morning for a day shift."
