The Govan Mbeki Municipality in Mpumalanga was on Tuesday fined R200 million for violating environmental laws.
The Bethal Magistrate's Court imposed the fine after the State and the municipality entered a plea and sentence agreement, according to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
NPA spokesperson Monica Nyuswa said the sentencing related to the disposal of raw and untreated sewage into the Emzinoni vicinity, eMbalenhle wastewater treatment plant, Trichardt Spruit, Wela Mlambo, Leandra N17 pump station, Waterval Hoek River, Blesbok Spruit and Groot Spruit between November 2019 and September 2020.
