Gauteng police are searching for a group linked to a cash-in-transit (CIT) heist in the Mandela Sports Complex in Hammanskraal on Wednesday morning.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Amanda van Wyk said: "It is alleged the suspects fired gunshots at the guards and then blew up the cash van before they fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money. The suspects reportedly fled the scene in a white Ford Ranger."

She said, in a separate incident two weeks ago, police foiled an attempted heist in Dobsonville, Soweto, which left two people dead. She said officers recovered three vehicles, an R5, and three AK47 assault rifles.

News24 reported that the police, who exchanged fire with heavily armed robbers, had responded to a tip-off.

National police commissioner General Fannie Masemola said law enforcement was working hard to clamp down on CIT syndicates.

"Our intelligence operators are on the ground. Our teams are on high alert. We cannot rule with criminals; it's either them or us. Our focus is to ensure the safety and security of law-abiding citizens," he said.

Van Wyk warned the public not to interfere with CIT crime scenes by collecting stolen cash.
