Eastern Cape police have launched a manhunt for the killers of a Qonce tavern owner.

The 42-year-old man, Thabo Justice Bheja, was shot while riding his bike in Qonce on Sunday.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, said officers were summoned to the scene of the shooting in Fleet Street, around midday.

A woman was injured after a stray bullet hit her in the upper body. She was rushed to hospital.

Police believe that Bheja had stopped at an intersection when three armed men opened fire.

"Bheja sustained multiple gunshot wounds and succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Bheja, who owned a tavern in Sweetwaters, was previously nabbed for possession of illicit drugs found inside his tavern in August this year."

Nkohli said:

The drug bust followed a shooting incident, where two people were fatally shot outside his tavern in Sweetwaters the same evening of his arrest.

Police also found 465 Mandrax tablets, a black powder in a plastic bag, a 9mm pistol, and an undisclosed amount of cash at the scene of the shooting.

Nkohli said the seized items would be subjected to forensic investigation.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the investigating team 0n 082 301 7762.

"The information may also be shared via Crime Stop on 08600 10111, or My SAPS App, or at the nearest police station," said Nkohli.
