A rescue mission is under way to save scores of endangered Cape gannets at South Africa's largest breeding colony due to a suspected fish oil spill near Algoa Bay.
Bird Island, where the oiled birds have been found, is home to 90 000 to 100 000 breeding pairs and is the largest Cape gannet colony in the world.
According to the South African Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa), this is the third such spill to take place in two years.
