A legalistic response to the Wilgenhof fallout is not the route Stellenbosch University should follow in dealing with the furore.
"The individualising of trying to find a few people to now find guilty and punish, thinking we can then move on, is not going to deepen transformation," said Dr Wilhelm Verwoerd, a senior researcher at the university's Centre for the Study of the Afterlife of Violence and the Reparative Quest.
And, he argued, it was unfair to blame young Wilgenhoffers for an "intergenerational tradition that needs to be investigated and taken responsibility for".
